When was the last time you tried something new?

I decided to tap into an old passion of mine….painting! I heard about this type of fun painting class on facebook and decided to look around to see if we had one in the Rochester area. Turns out we do!
It's called Painting with a Twist in Fairport.  It was so much fun!

In school, we have been learning about writing personal narratives about a time when you learned something new. We were discussing all the feelings that go along with doing something for the first time. I shared my personal narrative about my painting night. I said I was excited and nervous at the same time! We talked about how you can have 2 feelings like that and they just seem to wrap around each other! Feelings of being relaxed & proud made me want to do it again! They wanted me to bring in my painting to show them the next day! They all want to take a class! There are painting events for children and families!

The Second Grade classes went on a field trip to the Rochester Public Market last week! The rain stopped just in time! Most of the tour is under cover inside the "sheds" anyway. We had our tour of the Market first. We learned about how the Public Market has been around for over 100 years. We saw things they still have around from years ago, like the horse weighing boards, and the changes that we see today.

Later we interviewed the vendors to learn what goods/produce they sell, how they grow them,  and how they transport it to the Market.

Taylor School accepts
Rachel's Challenge with starting

We have already added 28 kindness links to our class chain and it is growing FAST!

Another Pocket Day!
And were they prepared!?!
Jason had a total of 23 pockets and Shawn had 28!
Together we had 104 pockets in the class!
An all-time new record.
What a fun way to gather data and then graph and record the information.

Our walking tour of the
Village of Spencerport!

We went on a walking tour of the village and learned about our community Then and Now! Many local historians shared personal stories and historical information about our town years ago. It was a beautiful day to walk the village and have lunch at the Gazebo with the Mayor!

Our classroom library with a face lift and reorganization!
Shelves were added and furniture rearranged to create a more inviting reading corner under the tree. Additional baskets were also used to expand into genres such as historical fiction, math literature, and authors. Students will have better access to the books they love for DEAR time and buddy reading!

Have you heard of Fun Poetry Monday's?
It was an idea that Meghan had for sharing poems over the loudspeaker of our school each Monday after announcements. She quickly had three other students get on board with her idea: Trevor, Arriyanna, and Taylor. They planned and practiced. First, they decided on a theme-poems about famous people. Then they worked on the roles each one of them would have in the group. The group met daily and wrote the opening and closing "jingle", decided on the poem to be read the following Monday, and then practiced the announcement. It was so exciting to see a student-driven project like this come out of a student's love of poetry! I was the facilitator and would check in with the group periodically throughout the week to provide guidance and make suggestions. The group performed 3 Fun Poetry Monday's during the month of June! I am so proud of them for their creativity, collaboration, and ability to apply those 21st Century critical thinking skills on this real-life project! These students got to share their love of poetry and their project idea with Mrs. VanDerwater when she visited! They were SO excited!

My class had the privilege of meeting an amazing author/educator/published author on June 17th. Her name is Amy Ludwig VanDerwater. She had done professional development for our district in the past and collaborates with Lucy Calkins. Amy also has an awesome blog called The Poem Farm that my class has been blogging with her on this year. Check it out! And she just published the children's book Forest Has a Song.
 Best day ever !!

Stripes
                                                                     By Taylor

Stripes are like this

And stripes are like that

There are all kinds of stripes

As you can see!

Nature

By Aaliyah

Nature is a part of the world.

Birds are noisy in the tree

When they are chirping in my ear.

I hear them sing pretty.

I taste honey from the hives

when the busy bees do not mind.

I touch lovely plants.

I smell pretty crocuses that have sprung

And I see nature run our way!

Where am I?
by Ronan

Where I am?
I see red and blue cars.
I see no trees.
I see ten tall sky scrapers.
I hear black wheels.
Yes! I am in a city!

Happy 100th Day of School!
We celebrated the 100th day of school by reading 100 books with our reading buddies!

Our class learned about characters so we can better understand what we read! We worked in cooperative groups on specific books from the author Kevin Henkes. His books about relationships and friends tied in very well with our Bucket Lesson Friendship Unit this month. We collaborated and then created these character posters and a photostory to culminate the character study. Check out our photostory on our class website!
